Seal Your Roof!
Your roofing seems fine until a heavy storm hits and you find leaks all over your home. The day is gloomy, you want to stay inside and watch the rain fall from the window not from inside your living room ceiling. An option that a homeowner may have is to seal their roof. Sealing a roof includes options:
- two layers of felt
- synthetic roof membranes
- a polyurethane foam spray(for existing roofs)
When you seal your roof, it gives an extra protection against rain storms.
It is said that the roofing industry has suggested the felt paper as a way to help drain water away once it is behind the roof cover. The roof covering that you chose should be sealed with a membrane that is strong enough to be watertight, will stay in place if the primary roof blows off.

Muddy Mess North of Us
As SERVPRO of N. Vista/ San Marcos was finishing up work for the Ventura fire, the heavy rains hit. The rains in Santa Barbara were so heavy that it caused mud slides. All the burned, loose shrubs on land were easily being pushed down hills along with dirt. The homes that had survived the fire were now being taken out by mud slides. Just as we thought the crisis was over. Of course our crew members decided to stay longer to help. The only problem was the mud slides had shut down main and side roads. Our team was stuck in the hotel while the streets were being shut down left and right. All we could do was wait. Finally the storm stopped and the damage was done. Houses that we were working on were now gone. It was a very sad time for so many people, but SERVPRO of Escondido did not give up. Fire, Rain and mud cannot stop us. We found ways around the roads that were shut down and began work immediately. It is amazing to see how people come together during times of need. Our additional crew members drove 7+ hours to get to Santa Barbara, taking back routes and windy roads. It has been long working days for our crews that are up north, some are still there. We are so thankful here at SERVPRO of Escondido to have such hard working team members on our side!
Outside Water In Your Home
It could be a disaster if a home does not have a good drain system when storm rains will not let up. The water will continue to collect until it's pushing on your door searching for any sign of a crack to get inside. If the house is unoccupied for the duration of the storm the water can continue to leak in. A lot of times when water comes from the outside, it becomes dirty. The water can flow small particles of dirt into the crack under the door. Another example of contaminated water is sewage such as a toilet overflowing.
Here are some tips when dealing with contaminated water:
- Don't spread contaminated water by walking unnecessarily on damaged or wet areas.
- Don't turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
- Don't use household fans to dry the structure and spread contaminants.
- Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by it.
- Wash hands thoroughly after contact with contaminated items.

Protect Your Home From Rain Damage
Here at SERVPRO of North Vista and San Marcos we are no stranger to the damage that can be caused by rain and wind. Here's our recommendation for preventing what could become a huge headache because of a little rain: Have your roof inspected and if needed repaired!
More can go wrong then a couple of ugly water stains in your ceiling. If you don't catch the leak it will begin to rot even the frame of your house. When wood gets too damaged by water it has to be replaced. So basically what could start as a little bit of water from a little bit of rain can spread causing unnecessary water damage or mold damage costing you much more than a simple inspection.
