Who knew cooking in your kitchen could turn into this? This tenant in Escondido was planning to have a peaceful dinner at the rental property before this situation occurred. It's important to always be prepared for the worst in the event that this happens. It can happen to anyone but there are ways you can be more prepared for it. Always keep clutter out of the kitchen. Wipe down all surfaces in the kitchen including floors and walls so there are no flammable spills or layers of film for the fire to catch onto easily. Keep baking soda in reach of the stove top to throw on any open flames. Baking soda cuts off the oxygen supply to a fire similar to a fire extinguisher. In the case the fire is not tameable immediately call your local fire department and evacuate the premises. It is very important to use the proper equipment in a dry-out. 

Detection Equipment:

  • Moisture Sensors- used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards, and walls.
  • Moisture Meters-used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture 
  • Thermohydrometers- measures both temperature and relative humidity. After getting these two readings we can calculate specific humidity, dew point and vapor pressure.

Extraction Equipment:

  • Extractors-used in cleaning carpets and upholstery and in removing water from floors following a water damage. Extractors can be truck-mounted or portable. 

Air Moving Equipment:

  • Air Movers- used in water damage restoration to enhance evaporation at the surface level, reducing drying time. This moisture is eliminated using the dehumidification equipment. 

Dehumidification Equipment:

  • Dehumidifiers- By extracting water vapor from the air dehumidifiers lower the humidity. They pull the moist, humid air in and discharge dry, warm air. The dry air acts like a sponge, absorbing moisture from wet materials.

  1. Protect wells from taking safety improvement suggestions from a licensed contractor.
  2. Make sure your yard slopes away from your home to direct water away from it.
  3. Have a plumber install an exterior sewer backflow valve.
  4. Anchor fuel tanks.
  5. Have an electrician raise switches, sockets, circuit breakers, and wiring at least 12 inches above expected flood levels.

For winter(areas that experience snow):

  1. Rain can make snow melt quickly.

Employee wearing PPE PPE is required for all of our employees.

Safety always comes first at SERVPRO. A job can only be done correctly if you are prepared for it correctly.

Having the proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is important and always the first step in every job. Working in the restoration industry has potential for injury so it's important to be prepared at all times and protect yourselves in every way possible!

Allen has his PPE on for this mold loss. If there is mold present when cutting into the drywall, the spores can travel and even be inhaled. No one wants to inhale anything other than oxygen so our employees are required to wear masks & protective eye wear. Even if no mold is present, a mask is important to keep from inhaling debris that floats around and can cause irritation to eyes, nose, throat and etc.

We care about our employees and customers health so we always make sure everyone has the proper PPE on for each and every job.

Southern California is not known for rainy weather but when it does rain for the few days out of the year, it comes in heavy! We are blessed to live in a beautiful place where the sun is always shining but because of that we do not really prepare ourselves and our properties for the potential damage that a rainstorm can bring. Storms show us the faulty roof tiles, and potential bad workmanship of the home in general. Sadly the only way to know these faults exist is for a rain water leak to show you. Here at SERVPRO of N.Vista/San Marcos we are not strangers to the damage that can be caused by rain. Here's our recommendation for preventing what could become a huge headache because of rain. Have your roof inspected once a year!!

Far more can happen and go wrong then a couple of ugly water stains on your ceiling. If you don't catch the leak, it could begin to rot the frame of your home. When wood gets too wet and ultimately damaged by water, it has to be replaced. So basically what could start as a little bit of water from a little bit of rain can spread causing unnecessary and expensive water damage and/or eventually mold damage costing you much more than the price of a simple inspection.

The mission started in 1991, when Joe and Steve sat down for lunch in Camp Pendleton. Both were serving in the U.S. Marines Corps, and they began discussing what they'd do when their service was over. Eventually, they broached the possibility of starting a business together.

In July of that year, they created G.I. Joe Carpet Cleaning, the humble beginnings of a decades-long partnership. Because of their other duties, they could only work at nights and on their days off.

Joe retired from the Marines in 1995, giving him more time to dedicate to the growing business. In 1998, his son, Juan, was old enough to join, and that year, they re-branded the company as G.I. Joe Restoration.

Five years later, Joe and Juan bought their first franchise, SERVPRO of N. Vista/San Marcos. In 2005, Steve retired from the Marines, allowing him to join Joe and Juan as three owners of SERVPRO.

In 2018 the three bought SERVPRO of Escondido, then continued on to purchase SERVPRO of Carlsbad in 2019, followed by the acquisition of SERVPRO of NE San Diego County in 2020.

Today, SERVPRO employs nearly 75 people from four locations across southern California, with a headquarters in San Marcos. Though we've grown much since that lunch conversation in 1991, our mission remains the same: To be the best restoration company there is.

Storms Can and Will Cause a lot of Damage in Your Home.

Storm disaster trailer. We have a storm disaster team that deploys to wherever needs our assistance in the US.

It could be a disaster if a home does not have a good drain system when storm rains will not let up. The water will continue to collect until it's pushing on your door searching for any sign of a crack to get inside. If the house is unoccupied for the duration of the storm the water can continue to leak in. A lot of times when water comes from the outside, it becomes dirty. The water can flow small particles of dirt into the crack under the door. Another example of contaminated water is sewage such as a toilet overflowing.

Here are some tips when dealing with contaminated water:

  • Don't spread contaminated water by walking unnecessarily on damaged or wet areas. 
  • Don't turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
  • Don't use household fans to dry the structure and spread contaminants.

Our Team Deploys to Help with Wildfires.

Yelp review expressing gratitude to our team. One of our customers took to Yelp to express their gratitude for our teams assistance during a hard time.

When wildfires hit, our team deploys. We venture out miles away from our territory to lend our helping hands for the people who are in the midst of the flames and smoke. One example of a time we did this was for the Thomas Fire in 2017.

No one knew the Thomas Fire in Santa Barbara would turn into the largest wildfire in California. It burned through 273,246 acres of land. It destroyed 10,000 homes. SERVPRO of North Vista/ San Marcos headed up north to help as soon as the fire calmed down and it was safe to travel. A lot of homes were left in ashes but the neighboring ones left standing had serious smoke damage to everything in the home. There was a layer of soot on everything. When items or walls have smoke damage, it's the only thing you can smell. The smell of smoke is very powerful. Our team was happy to be welcomed into our customers homes and give them clean air to breathe again. It is very important to keep our customers updated and share our knowledge with them along the whole way. As you can see in this yelp review, we want to make you as comfortable and happy as possible. 

A SMALL Leak can Turn into a BIG Problem.

Sometimes we think a small leak is okay because it's "small" but if a small leak is left unseen for too long, it can actually do the most damage. The water can seep through carpet, soak up walls, and pool on flooring which will only continue to cause damage eventually turning it into a large disaster. At least much larger than it could have been. 

Here are some important tips for your home:

  • Identify the source and type of water
  • Measure the temperature and humidity
  • Survey the extent of damage and inspect for hidden moisture
  • Emergency water extraction
  • Move and block furniture/contents
  • Inspect carpet pad
  • Apply treatments if needed(deodorization)
  • Utilize drying and monitoring equipment
  • Dispose of refuse

Happy Holidays!

With Thanksgiving just passing and Christmas right around the corner we are in the thick of the Holiday season here at SERVPRO of North Vista/San Marcos.  It also signals the end of the year for 2017.  We want to take a moment and reflect on the year we have had.  Some people have come, some people have gone, and some people have even come back. Through it all our team is stronger than it was in the beginning of the year and we are very thankful and appreciative of all of the effort that our team has put in to making this a successful year for us.  We have been able to help thousands of customers and received somewhere around 50 fivestar reviews online from some of them.  We took extreme pride in the services we provided for 2017 and it certainly shows.  We are very excited to see what 2018 has in store for us.

Houston Will Rebuild

Home is where you make it.

Although it is difficult to try and find some positive news out of all of the devastation and tragedy that has occurred in Houston, we at SERVPRO of N.Vista/San Marcos do have some good news to share.  All of our employees who traveled to Houston to help with the clean up efforts have now returned safe and sound.  With open arms we want to welcome back Joe, Alex, Sebastian, and Junior.  We are all very proud of all of you and happy to have you back.  You all sacrificed your time with family and donated your blood, sweat, and tears to help those who truly needed it. The definition of hero is as follows: "a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities."  If that is how a hero is defined then we are proud to say that we have four, real life heroes, working at SERVPRO of N.Vista/San Marcos.

Our 2017 Group Photo

Today was a happy and sad day for SERVPRO of N.Vista/San Marcos.  We held our monthyly all hands meeting, like we do every month.  However one of the topics covered in the meeting today was announcing to everyone that after 10 years of service, Fernanada Robinson is leaving us.  Fernanada is one of the longest standing employees our franchise has.  She believes she can remember a time when there were only eight employees total, including her.  Boy how things have changed over the past 10 years. It certainly shows, as we also took, our annual group photo, which is included below.  We had to be sure to have Fernanada in it.  Our franchise is now somewhere around 60 + total employees.

You will be missed Fernanada.  Thank you for everything.

A Shout Out To Our Leader!

The attached picture is Joe all suited up on Easter Sunday.  On a holiday, he was out there in the heat, crawling under a house, to help a customer.

This blog is dedicated to our fearless leader, our franchise's founding father, Jose Araya or just Joe, as everyone calls him.

 

Joe has been in the restoration industry for over 30 years!  In 1991 he started a company called G.I Joe Carpet Cleaning.  That business thrived and eventually lead him to owning and operating our N.Vista/San Marcos Franchise.  Everything our franchise is today is because of Joe.

Joe spoke at our meeting earlier this week and told stories of growing up very poor in Costa Rica.  He would plant seeds for banana plants and watch them grow so he could sell them while the other kids spent all day playing.  It seems he has always had a mind for business and always been a hard worker.

 

Joe's spirit shines through everyday at our franchise.  Every positive Yelp review we receive, and we receive a lot, Joe's spirit helped cause that. Every customer who is blown away by our high level of professionalism, that is Joe's work ethic & pride showing in a job well done.

Joe set the standard for our franchise and we want him to know we appreciate it.  We take our reputation and his very serious.  We won't let you down Joe.

Flood Damage in Carlsbad Won't Ruin Christmas

Our first Google Review of 2017

The image below is our first Google Review for 2017.  This was for a homeowner in Carlsbad, CA who experienced some flood damage on the Monday immediately following Thanksgiving.  She took the time to write us a review because she was very fearful at the time of the flood that she would not be able to host her family for Christmas dinner.  Luckily, our employees at SERVPRO of N.Vista/ San Marcos were able to throw on both our hard hats and our elf shoes and get her house all fixed up in time.  She was very happy with the service and restoration services we provided (she actually told us we provided "Nordstrom level service") to her and we were very happy that we were able to help and her family spend Christmas together.

One of our New Year Resolutions is to receive more Google Reviews.  So far 2017 is off to an amazing start.

SERVPRO of N.Vista / San Marcos sends love & support to Tennessee wildfire victims and workers

SERVPRO of N.Vista / San Marcos would like to send our thoughts and prayers out to not only all of the families and victims of the Tennessee wildfires but also all of the volunteers, fire fighters, and clean up crews as well.  Many of those clean up crews are part of our SERVPRO family.  These fires literally hit close to home for us, as our SERVPRO headquarters are located in Tennessee.

We know how hard the crews are working out there and we have seen in San Diego how badly wildfires can affect lives, homes, and families. The recovery process will be long and hard but is has already begun and SERVPRO is very proud to be a part of that.

Our thoughts, prayers, and support go out to all of those affected by the Tennessee Wildfires.

As Thanksgiving approaches tomorrow, SERVPRO of N.Vista San Marcos would like to take a minute and use this blog as an opportunity to say thanks.  

We would like to thank all of our wonderful customers who are kind enough to take a minute and leave us a positive review on Yelp.  We know it is easier said than done and everyone is very busy in their lives.  Their reviews greatly impact our business, as almost everyone goes online to check reviews on companies before they use them today. We take our reputation very serious and thanks to our customers our reviews and ratings reflects that.
